Miliband on spreading democracy Foreign Secretary David Miliband’s speech in Oxford yesterday, in which he spoke about the need to support growing democracies around the world despite concerns over Iraq and Afghanistan has been widely covered in the media. In his speech he said “the rule of law in a democracy is the best long term defence against global terrorism and conflict,” adding various ways in which the UK can help promote democracy around the world and that “there will be situations where the hard power of targeted sanctions, international criminal proceedings, security guarantees and military intervention will be necessary.” Click here for the full speech.
