ISAF Joint Command morning operational update: 01 October 2012

South

Afghan Special Police and coalition forces conducted a vehicle interdiction operation in Chakhansur district, Nimroz province last night resulting in the recovery of more than 2,660 kilograms (5,864 pounds) of drugs and the detention of a number of insurgents. The narcotics cache included 2,620 kilograms of opium and 49 kilograms of white heroin. The drugs are estimated to be worth approximately $800,000. The detained insurgents are believed to be involved in narcotics and weapons facilitation to the Taliban.

An Afghan and coalition security force detained two suspected insurgents while in search of a Taliban attack planner in Nad ‘Ali district, Helmand province, today. The attack planner is believed to be responsible for planning and executing ambush-attacks on Afghan and coalition forces. He exercises command and control and direction to insurgents for his senior Taliban leadership within Nad ‘Ali district.

East

An Afghan-led security force, supported by coalition troops, detained multiple suspected insurgents during an operation in search of a Haqqani leader in Sabari district, Khost province, today. The Haqqani leader is believed to maintain a large cache of weapons and responsible for purchasing supplies for future insurgent attacks.

An Afghan and coalition security force detained several suspected insurgents during an operation to arrest a Taliban leader in Gelan district, Ghazni province, today. The Taliban leader is suspected of planning attacks using improvised explosive devices  and small arms fire against Afghan and coalition forces throughout Gelan district.

During a security operation in search of a Haqqani leader, an Afghan and coalition security force detained a number of suspected insurgents in Pul-e ‘Alam district, Logar province, today. The Haqqani leader is suspected of acquiring supplies to plan and execute suicide attacks against Afghan and coalition forces while directly reporting to senior Haqqani leadership.
