ISAF Joint Command morning operational update: 24 September 2012

North

Afghan Special Police members of Provincial Response Company Baghlan detained two suspicious individuals and recovered a machine gun, ammunition, and two chest rigs during an operation to arrest an insurgent cell leader in Narhin district, Baghlan province yesterday.

South

An Afghan and coalition security force killed two insurgents and seized several kilograms of heroin during an operation in search of a Taliban leader in Zharay district, Kandahar province, today. As the security force approached the Taliban leader’s suspected location, an armed group of insurgents displayed hostile intent toward the Afghan and coalition troops. The security force positively identified the lethal threat and engaged, killing two insurgents. No civilians were harmed during the operation. The security force also detained four suspected insurgents and seized a firearm as a result of the operation.

An Afghan-led security force, supported by coalition troops, detained a few suspected insurgents during an operation to arrest a Taliban leader in Zharay district, Kandahar province, today. The Taliban leader is suspected of being a specialist in the use of improvised explosive devices and believed to have used them in several attacks against Afghan and coalition security forces in recent months.

Afghan and coalition forces today confirmed the arrest of an insurgent financial coordinator during an operation in Kandahar City, Kandahar province Sept. 19. The detained insurgent, Mohammed Qaseem, is believed to be the owner of the Rahmat Hawala Network, an organization suspecting of funding insurgent activity, based out of Wesh district, Kandahar province.

Afghan National Security Forces and coalition forces today confirmed the arrest of a tactical-level Taliban leader and weapons facilitator during an operation Sept. 14 in Nad Ali district, Helmand province. The leader, Zakir, is alleged to be actively involved in conducting attacks against ANSF patrols and check points in Sangin district, Helmand province. He is also believed to have links to senior Taliban leaders.

East

An Afghan-led security force, supported by coalition troops, detained a few suspected insurgents during an operation to arrest a Haqqani leader in Khost district, Khost province, today. The Haqqani leader is believed to plan and coordinate improvised explosive device attacks against Afghan and coalition forces throughout the region. The security force also seized several firearms and heavy weapons ammunition as a result of the operation.

Capital

Afghan and coalition forces today confirmed the arrests of several insurgents, including many leaders, in Kabul in recent weeks.

Insurgent leader Zabihullah, detained Sept. 9, is suspected of being in the final stages of planning to transport rockets and conduct attacks against ANSF and coalition forces in Kabul.

Mohammed Shah, detained in Police District 8, Kabul City during a Sept. 9, operation, is suspected of assisting and facilitating insurgent activity throughout Kabul province.

Insurgent leader Abdullah, detained in Police District 14, Sept. 12, is believed to have been responsible for coordinating and conducting improvised explosive device attacks on Kabul. He is also believed to have links with at least five other insurgents previously detained by joint forces.

Dost Mohammad, arrested during a Sept. 12, operation in Police District 21, Kabul City, is suspected of constructing a vehicle-borne improvised explosive device and conducting attacks against ANSF and ISAF in Kabul. During the same operation, the combined force seized a large quantity of pre-mixed aluminum powder and ammonium nitrate-based homemade explosives and a box containing approximately 100 detonators. All materials were destroyed on site.
