“This majestic biography will set the standard for all future works about General Petraeus. With superb narrative skill, Broadwell simultaneously provides an intimate look at Petraeus the man, a fascinating account of modern warfare, and an elegant study of leadership.” – Doris Kearns Goodwin, Pulitzer Prize-winning author of No Ordinary Time and Team of Rivals
Over the course of three years of research, I have been fortunate to have unique access to General Petraeus, his friends, family, and many associates to inform my reporting. I also spent much of the last year in Afghanistan embedded at ISAF headquarters and in the field in order to chronicle the war through Petraeus’s eyes, and also take readers “on patrol” throughout Afghanistan to see counterinsurgency in action. The final product includes unique snapshots of Petraeus’s development over the years, a war chronicle of Petraeus’s ultimate military command in Afghanistan – told through his perspective and those fighting on the frontlines. It also provides lessons in strategic leadership and civil-military relations.
One major goal as we launch the book is to bring attention to wounded warriors, especially those with “invisible wounds” such as Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. I am donating 20% of my net proceeds for hardcover publication to wounded warrior organizations and will be speaking to the national media about the needs of this population. You can find out more information on several critical programs we support on the book website: Wounded Warriors.
I am grateful for this journey and humbled and inspired by those who serve; I hope we captured their tremendous work in a way that inspires you, too!
As we prepare to launch, may I ask you to consider a couple of things?
1. Order a copy or two as a gift for someone in your life. I believe the book has inspirational leadership lessons for anyone from parents and CEOs to corporate staff members and veterans or troopers of any age or gender. The book is available for pre-order at Amazon, Barnes and Noble, and other online distributors.
2. Help create a buzz! The more books we pre-sell, the higher the chance of hitting a best seller list. Reach out to the networks you’re a part of (college alumni groups and professional groups like CFR, French America Foundation, etc.) and let them know about this book by email (e.g, share this email or send out a personal note; suggest it as a gift) or via a venue suggested below.
3. Check out the book’s Facebook page (“All In: The Education of General David Petraeus (by Paula Broadwell)”) and click on “Like!” Please “Share” it on your Facebook page.
4. Tweet about the book on Twitter (#ALLIN, #petraeus, #leadership, and #paulabroadwell). Follow book news on Twitter as well at @paulabroadwell.
5. Finally, visit the book website (www.paulabroadwell.com) where you can view pictures from General Petraeus’s early life and time in Afghanistan, as well as some from my book-writing experience in Afghanistan. You can also read some of the reviews the book has received thus far and check out the upcoming media appearances (which include a nation-wide speaking tour and national television and radio engagements).
Again, I am grateful for your support the past year and the opportunity to have shadowed one of our nation’s most notable leaders as well as the “new greatest generation” of rising stars.
Thank you for helping to share the story!
All In!
Paula
